Tonight, for New Year’s visit “Hatsumode,” I visited Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, known as the most important “Shinto” Shrine in my hometown Kamakura, Home of the Samurai. Samurai guardian god is enshrined in Tsurugaoka Hachimangu.
Since Kamakura is very close to Tokyo and it only takes about 1 hour by a train from Tokyo area, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine is a very popular place for the New Year’s visit. Kamakura is also one of the most popular sightseeing spots in Japan. In addition, Kamakura is known as a small calm countryside town. Kamakura is close to Tokyo and could commute to city areas where many offices are.
Back in 1192, Kamakura was the capital of Japan. It is known as the first national government of the Samurai in Japan.
In the end of January 2012, the Japanese government submitted the World Heritage recommendation to UNESCO; however, unfortunately UNESCO rejected it.
It is one of the cultures to read your fortune on the fist day every year.
As said, for 2012 New Year’s visit, I went Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine, the most important Shinto Shrine in my hometown “Kamakura, Home of the Samurai.” I expected more people, but it was not as crowded as past years. There seems to be lots of people by looking at this photo, but there are usually more people, but not this year.
Usually, I have to wait and lineup for 1 hour to go up to the main shrine. This year, it only took me 5 minutes to go up.
