At a Road Station* “Sukumo Sunny Side Park” in Sukumo City, Kochi** Prefecture Japan, we met Mr. Hidemi Hirata, owner of Okonomiyaki*** restaurant “Mokumokuya” and… we started discussing about ideal style of travelers’ rest places, guest houses and road stations (roadside stations).
Hirata san took care of 2,500 abandoned kittens and gave them to people who would take good care of them. |

****In Shikoku (4 prefectures / provinces) island Japan, there is Shikoku Henro (Shikoku Pilgrimage)” which is associated with Kukai or Kobo Daishi, the Buddhist monk master who propagated the Buddhist teaching in 800s. There are 88 Shikoku Henro pilgrimage temples where Kukai (said to be) visited as his Buddhist teaching training. Since Kukai visited the 88 temples, Shikoku Henro journey is very popular among travelers (tourists, campers, bicyclist, bikers, college students, etc). Travelers who visit 88 temples are called “Ohenro san.”
Because there is “Shikoku Henro” system, people in Shikoku are very kind and very used to travelers and there are so many huts in Shikoku.
