Aomori is located in the Tohoku or northeastern region and the northernmost prefecture of mainland Honshu. Tohoku (northeastern region) consists of 6 prefectures such as Akita, Aomori, Fukushima, Iwate, Miyagi and Yamagata. It takes about 3.5 hours from Tokyo to Aomori by a bullet train (shinkansen). Hakkoda Mountains, a volcanic mountain range, is located in south of Aomori Prefecture, Japan. Besides Hakkoda Mountains, Aomori is famous for Nebuta Festivals, Lake Towada (the largest crater lake in Honshu (mainland of Japan), Oirase River (a stream draining from Lake Towada), and Shirakami Sanchi (which is designated as a World Natural Heritage site in 1993).
